How Not to Use Data Like a Racist

Join the Data Viz and Reporting FIG for the Visitor Studies Association's first watch party! Together, we will be viewing a recording from a recent Data Viz DC webinar, “How to Not Use Data Like a Racist,” led by Heather Krause, founder and principal data scientist at Datassist. The webinar points out ways bias is introduced into our data visualization and provides tips for how we can embed a culturally responsive and equitable lens into our work as visitor studies professionals. Our goals are to: Learn from data scientist outside the visitor studies field about how not to collect, visualize or disseminate data like a racist Prompt sharing and critical reflection on how Heather’s work applies to our work in visitor studies (vulnerability required!) Inspire us to move towards anti-racist work in visitor studies In this watch party, we will jointly view the recording from a past webinar. We will be using Zoom and encourage participants to dialogue in the chat box during the viewing. We will leave some time for discussion after watching the webinar. The session will not be recorded, so feel free to share your best and worst--we're open to growth and learning from our mistakes! This watch party is hosted with approval by Heather Krause.
