The In-House Evaluator Turns 30: New Opportunities and Challenges
June 28, 2pm ET/ 11am PT
At the VSA Conference 30 years ago, four in-house museum evaluators discussed the qualities of their roles (Minda Borun, Margaret Marino, Zahava Doering, Patricia MacNamara). Their discussion, including contributions from audience members, was published in the article, The In-House Evaluator: Opportunities and Challenges, in Visitor Studies (1993).
Two current internal evaluators (who have also worked as external evaluators!), Alice Anderson (Minneapolis Institute of Art) and Johanna Jones (Oakland Museum of California) will facilitate a conversation around this article and the similarities/differences we see 30 years later. Some questions we may discuss include:
- What does our generation of in-house museum evaluators see in their conversation? What resonates and what feels very different?
- What has our field figured out and streamlined, and what are enduring questions about our positionality and power?
- When might someone choose an in-house position, and when might working externally be the right move?
