Reading Group: 2024 Screven Award

Please join us for a book club-style discussion of this year’s Screven Award winning article, “A Review of Augmented Reality for Informal Science Learning Supporting Design of Intergenerational Group Learning.” Conversation will be directed by the interests and input of participants.  We encourage you to come ready to share your thoughts and raise questions!  Some topics we might explore include:

• Augmented Reality (AR): The authors focus their review on augmented reality (AR) in informal science institutions.  What experiences have you had with AR in museums and informal learning spaces (science or otherwise)?  How have your experiences with AR aligned with the affordances and limitations the authors describe on page 4 and pages 12-14?
• Literature Review Methodology: The authors describe their literature review approach on pages 6-8.  How does this align with how you have conducted literature reviews yourself?  What questions do you have about the process and its reliability?
• Family-Friendly Learning Experiences: The authors used the Philadelphia-Camden Informal Science Education Collaborative’s (PISEC) Seven Characteristics of Successful Family-Friendly Learning Exhibits (Minda Borun and Jennifer Dritsas, 1997) to code AR experiences surfaced in the literature reviewed.  How might their definitions of these characteristics interpreted for the AR setting resonate with you and your work (see pages 8-10)?  
• Future Research in AR: The authors outline multiple questions for future research in their conclusions (pages 17-18).  What questions resonate with you and/or what other questions do you think are worth exploring?
